Whidbey filmmakers Mark Dworkin and Melissa Young visited Co-op Cincy, an inspiring network of worker-owned cooperatives in Cincinnati creating a regional economy that works for all. With significant leadership from women and people of color, members work in many sectors, including farming, food distribution, childcare, t-shirt printing, home weatherization, and more. What would it take for your business to become a cooperative? How could you join with others to create a new cooperative business here on Whidbey?
Kathie Rivas of Heartsong Home Care Cooperative and Shawn Serdahl of A1 DesignBuild will be available to share their experiences as founding members of their worker-owned cooperatives. Filmmakers Young and Dworkin have produced documentaries together for over 30 years, across the U.S., Central and South America and Europe. They are known for offering vivid images, and the perspectives of a broad range of people.
Kathie Rivas is the founding owner/member and executive director of Heartsong Homecare Cooperative. She also opened and is managing the Adult Day Program for folks with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
Shawn Serdahl is a member-owner of A1DesignBuild, a worker-owned cooperative in Bellingham, Washington, where he serves as Board President and Fabrication Manager. He was part of the team that led A1’s transition from a privately owned company to a worker cooperative in 2017, and he has stayed committed to the cooperative model ever since, building a business where the people doing the work share in its ownership, decisions, and success.
Their films have screened in numerous film festivals. Six of their documentaries have aired nationally on PBS, including a previous work on worker cooperatives called SHIFT CHANGE.
